Ever imagine swimming with dolphins? You’ve seen this on TV and now this is a possibility at Ocean Adventure in Subic so it may be time to check that box on your bucket list! It is approximate a 40 kilometer drive from the Subic waterfront. This translates to a leisurely 35 minute drive through virgin forest and smooth asphalted roads.

What kind of ticket do you need to buy? We recommend purchasing the Beach Encounter for PHP 2,800.00 per person as this includes the entrance fee of PHP 500.00. Bring your chosen swimming apparel and you are all set to go.

Make sure to call Ocean Adventure ahead of time to reserve the limited slots for the Beach Encounter with the dolphins and get the schedule for the Sea Lions and Dolphin shows amongst the other attractions!

The VIP Zoobic Safari experience is highly recommended as you will be able to get up close and personal with the tigers, as in centimeters away from a tiger feeding on chicken. This can only be experienced at the Zoobic Safari in Subic!

Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris)

When I first heard about the Zoobic Safari, I thought I would have the distinct pleasure and honor of hand feeding a tiger personally. After having seen it done just a few centimeters away, it did not seem as appealing as the original idea as it was bloody messy and without experience could have resulted in the loss of a finger or two. In any case if you are a fan of big cats and crocodiles, you should visit Zoobic for the tiger safari! It is only 29 kilometers from the Subic waterfront and a leisurely 30 minute drive through Subic’s winding virgin forest pass on smooth asphalted roads, thanks to the Americans. This post will share with you a detailed summary of the various park areas and the most useful admission ticket to get.

We highly recommend purchasing the VIP tickets for PHP 795.00 ($US 18.00) per person as this comes with being chauffeured with the special white Zoobic tram, feed for the tigers, crocodiles and birds as well as a bottled water, cold towel, and a picture with the bengal/siberian tiger cub. These are all essential to get the full Zoobic Safariexperience without the hassle of driving around and paying for additional items individually. Make sure to keep your receipt as this will be needed to be presented to the guide.

The adventure begins with a briefing of the main attractions of the park by your guide which takes approximately 20 minutes.

Half Bengal / Half Siberian Cub

Within this initial staging area are an adult white Siberian tiger, and a few Bengal/Siberian tiger cubs to be taken pictures with. We spent most of our time observing the huge Siberian tiger of which there are only 400 left remaining in the wild. Tigers have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years in the wild, but greater than 20 years in captivity. Interestingly enough there are over 11,000 tigers kept as pets in the U.S. which is significantly larger than the global wild tiger population of 3,500.

The guided tour begins with the aviary where there are parrots and owls.

There is also a section to feed the birds which tickles, but there is nothing to be afraid of.

Bearcats are indigenous to Palawan and are endangered species, but the had around 15 lazing around in the afternoon sun. We were able to feed them some bananas for PHP 20.00! They are quite cute, but they do emit a pungent odor.

Soon after we are able to practice some archery with an authentic Aeta bow and arrows. The first shot was too weak, the second hit the board, and the third was almost a bullseye! This was fun!

Then our group arrived perfectly in time for the animal show, primarily composed of Tinikling dancing dogs and carpet flyers! We were hoping to touch an ostrich or ride a camel! The Tinikling dancing poodle was quite something extraordinary though!

Zooper Tram

The next stage of the tour was to get to the next area of the park, the Tiger Safari! As we had VIP tickets, this provided for a spot on the Zooper tram which are more spacious and comfortable than the regular trams and also cold towel and bottled water are provided. As an option, guests may also take their own cars instead of the tram to the other areas of the park.

The first stop on the Zooper Tram was the breeding cages of over 20 Bengal tigers. The stench of urine was unimaginable – this is where the cold towel is a necessity otherwise it would be unbearable. To see so many adult tigers kept in such claustrophobic conditions was a bit depressing especially since there was a whole area of the Safari behind it that was open, but we were informed that they do take their turns to roam. It would also be difficult to release all of them into one area due to their territorial nature as an individual tiger normally has a territory greater than 400 square kilometers.

It was a busy day at the park, so our group had to wait our turn to get into the customized safari jeeps which took around 15 minutes. There are souvenir shops and snacks as well as restrooms in the waiting area.

Now it was time to board the Zoobic Safari Jeeps, which were modified jeepneys that could sit 20 passengers. As we were part of the VIP tour we were able to sit in the jeepney that actually fed the tiger, this was awesome!

The feeder simply held out raw whole chicken to the Tiger and he was able to gnaw at it through the cage and it surprisingly went through. Now imagine an arm go through the cage. Each tiger is fed 7 Kilos of chicken a day. The feeder also through one chicken on top of the jeep and the tiger lunged on top and boy you could feel the jeep shake under the weight of this 200 Kilo magnificent beast when he landed to eat the chicken. What a cute little kitty!

The tiger safari took around 20 minutes and the containment area was around 3000 square meters with the 3 Jeeps driving around along variously elevated routes. We liked the fact that there was a watering hole for the tigers to cool off.

Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis)

We then took the Zooper Tram to the lair of the crocs. Say hello to the Philippine crocodile, endemic to the Philippines and critically endangered. How endangered? Well probably less than 100 running around in the wild.

The positive news is that they seem to be multiplying well in captivity as there are now over 50 crocodiles at the park. Zoobic is however sending all new eggs to Palawan to be hatched in the wild as they have reached maximum capacity.

Within the crocodile’s den you can also have your picture taken with a baby Philippine crocodile, the skin is quite smooth and cold. He was very huggable at this stage in life. Mouth has been taped shut to prevent any harm.

One of the thousands of U.S. munition bunkers spread around Subic is now used for storage for Zoobic. This was on the route towards the natural village of the Aetas, indigenous mountain tribes in the Philippines.

Ostriches and boars are left to wander around this area.

The last stage of the journey was the Aeta Trail.

It was kind enough of the Aetas to present to us a few of their tribal dances, we liked the monkey dance and the rain dance most! Thanks to our Zoobic guide who was very professional and knowledgeable and was able to answer all our childishly inane questions.

Reflecting on our experience, we were able to see, hear and breathe tiger, feed the birds, crocodiles and a bearcat, fire arrows from an authentic Aeta bow, be centimeters away from a tiger devouring a chicken, touch and kiss a baby Philippine crocodile and spending a minute hugging a half Siberian/half Bengal tiger cub named Cookie. This has made us feel one step closer to nature and have a deeper understanding of these cute furry and scaly animals, reptiles and birds as well as appreciate the local tribesmen. What more could anyone ask for?

A food trip to Tagaytay is no trip at all without a visit to one of the greatest restaurants in the Philippines – Antonio’s! It was Aksana’s first time to visit this fine dining restaurant serenely situated deep within the rolling hills of Tagaytay.

Just follow the Antonio’s road markers from the main road and after 2 kilometers and a few turns, you will arrive at a large black gate on your left.

Antonio’s has grown over the past ten years from a seating capacity of forty people to one hundred forty. Aside from consistently fantastic food, understated classic elegance that is so atmospheric you feel like you have been brought back in time to an Argentinian hacienda during the golden age of the 1920’s. Just basking in the chic black and white interiors took Aksana’s breath away. Owner and Chef Tony Boy Escalante must wake up every morning in a good mood as his establishment also serves as the primary home for his family.

Our favorite outdoor table by the pond, watching carp is just so relaxing.

To start off I had the bananarama smoothie with freshly blended strawberries, banana, apple juice, and strawberry yoghurt. Have no doubt, it tasted even better than it sounded.

Bananarama Smoothie - PHP 220.00++ ($US 5.00)

Aside from the anti-oxidants and countless vitamins and minerals it cleansed the palette for the entrees to come. On the other hand Aksana loves brewed coffee so it was gratifying that the coffee was unexpectedly refillable.

Garden Crepes – PHP 220.00++ ($US 5.00)

The texture of the wrap of the garden crepe was light and gentle yet surprisingly crispy. What really shines is the freshness of their ingredients – the filling of white button mushrooms, bell pepper, tomatoes, onion and cheddar was a savory combination. Definitely worth ordering again.

Corned Beef & Eggs - PHP 435.00++ ($US 10.00)

Who has not eaten corned beef in the Philippines? This corned beef however is not canned but made fresh by submerging the brisket in a special brine over a few days then boiling it. The meat was so tender and flavorful and served with horseradish and mustard. If you are a fan of corned beef for breakfast, make sure to try this version without preservatives. The scrambled egg was a treat in itself, it was so fluffy and delicate and must have been whisked to perfection.

Panna Cotta - PHP 210.00++ ($US 5.00)

For dessert we tried the panna cotta, a classic Italian desert that originated from Piemonte in northern Italy. Simply made from heavy cream, milk, sugar and gelatin it was not that sweet but the poppy seeds and rich flavors of vanilla and caramel made it shine.

We left at around 11:00 AM back to the Summit Ridge Hotel to check out at 12:00PM and head back to Manila for the drive home.

The Breakfast at Antonio’s menu has so many dishes to consider and drool over! Did you know that Antonio’s has been the highest ranked Philippine restaurant in the Miele Guide for the past few years? Please find below their full size menu.

P.S. It may soon be a good occasion to take a trip to Antonio’s as their new Breakfast venue will be setup on the same property by end of June 2010.

Buon Giorno’s Balinese Bed

If you are looking for an authentic Italian restaurant in Tagaytay, you don’t have to look any further than Buon Giorno at the Cliff House along Aguinaldo Highway. Aside from a diverse selection of antipasti, pasta, and pizza, they also offer a relaxed al fresco dining experience. Make sure to reserve the Balinese bed ahead of time as it is the coziest seat in the house! While you are there, you may as well indulge in a Fling frozen yoghurt for dessert.

We arrived for an early dinner around 6:30PM and was cheerfully greeted by the staff and swiftly brought to our table.

After all the alcoholic beverages that day, it was time to detox al fresco and we started off with none other than a grape shake which was vibrant in color and bursting with flavor.

Grape Shake – PHP 135.00 ++  ($US 3.25)

They must have used a tad bit more grapes to ensure satisfaction. This was well worth the price and we were hoping that rest of our orders would be at par.

Oil and Vinegar Cruet

The complimentary foccacia bread was perfect for mopping with a handy olive oil and vinegar cruet.

New York Pizza – PHP 274.00 ++ ($US 6.50)

Their New York Pizza is one of their bestsellers and rightfully so – The peperoni, bell peppers, onions, black olives and mozzarella provided a good combination of flavors and textures as well as a crunchingly good crust!

Spinaci E Funghi Ravioli - PHP 250++ ($US 6.00)

Aksana, being a ravioli fan opted for the spinach and mushroom in a light tomato sauce. The ravioli dough was blended with spinach, which was a nice touch to the creamy filling of spinach, cheese, and mushroom on the inside. By the time she was done, she was craving for more.

Buon Giorno is exactly what it presents itself to be – moderately priced Italian goodness on the ridge and we would definitely come back to sample another pizza and possibly their breakfast. How did you like Buon Giorno? What are your favorite dishes? Have you tried their breakfast?

For dessert, we went for the one and only frozen yoghurt place in Tagaytay which was just right around the corner, a tenant of the Cliff House – Fling!

The Summit Ridge Hotel stands ten stories high above the Tagaytay Ridge and offers commanding views of Taal Volcano and Lake. It is conveniently located opposite a renowned Tagaytay landmark Josephine’s Restaurant. As it is a Robinson’s Land development they have also built a promenade with a Robinson’s Supermarket. We arrived at 12:15PM and did not have any difficulty checking in ahead of the standard check in time of 2:00PM.

The lobby was spacious and airy, front desk swiftly processed our reservation and we were then escorted by the bellboy to our room. The glass elevators were a nice touch similar to the Belle View in Tagaytay Highlands.

Our room was a 32sqm. Twin Classic Room on the 4th Floor that we booked a special local rate of PHP 3,250 Net ($US 80.00) vs. the rack rate of PHP 7,250.00 Net ($US 180.00) due to the low season after Easter. While this did not include breakfast, it was not an issue as we already made plans to eat at Antonio’s Breakfast.

The hallways were wide and breezy as the open architecture provided unhindered airflow.

Summit Ridge Twin Classic Room – Php 3,250 Net

We easily felt at home in our room due to the soft wooden tones and Asian inspired decor. The split type air-conditioning was sufficiently able to cool the room in a few minutes even though it was a scorchingly hot day.

The toilet was spotless, modern, and comfortable with hot water, hair dryer, disposable toothbrushes, cotton buds and the usual toiletries.

We immediately unpacked and switched on the generic 32 inch LCD to Discovery Travel and Living. Did I mention Wifi was free and surprisingly fast?

Grolsch Premium Lager – PHP 70.00 Net (Sourced from Ryuma Grocery)

Happy with the modern conveniences of our room, it was time to pop open our bottle of Grolsch, a Dutch Premium Lager whose first brewery began in 1615. It was quite refreshing before we headed off to the outdoor infinity pool.

By 1:00 PM we were by the poolside sun beds lazing the afternoon away. The pool was shallow around four feet with a waterfall feature with a view towards the hills (unfortunately not Taal).

To build up an appetite we had a bottle of chilled Shochu produced in Kyoto, Japan. Shochu is a Japanese spirit similar to vodka and the difference between Shochu and Sake is that Shochu is distilled while Sake is brewed. It is known to be the better of two evils as it has only 20 calories per ounce.

Annie’s Pan Fried Salmon Steak with Mustard Cream and Mashed Potatoes – PHP 575.00 ++ ($US 14.00)

Annie’s Restaurant on the G/F of the Summit Ridge Hotel serves American comfort food from Spaghetti with Meatballs and club sandwiches to Yankee Pot Roast and Picnic Fried Chicken. We ordered the salmon steak to complement our shochu.

Summit Ridge Poolside and Daybeds

The poolside would have been perfect for a small party for couples since there was hardly anybody utilizing the facilities.

After taking a power nap in our room we freshened up to head out for happy hour at Taaleña, a short five minute drive away on the ridge.

Tagaytay is at the top of our list for a weekend getaway from Manila due to the fresh mountain air, spectacular views, short travel time, choice of restaurants, and activities. If you are heading up why not consider the Summit Ridge Hotel? The Summit Ridge Hotel opened its doors in June 2009 and is a modern and conveniently located hotel on the ridge. We simply reserved a room the night before, packed a few essentials and were on the way at 9:00AM the following morning!

Debenhams Outlet Store & Ryuma Ramen on the 2nd Floor @ Paseo Greenfield City (Sta. Rosa Exit on the SLEX)

Our first stop on the way to Tagaytay was the Debenham’s Outlet Store at Paseo Greenfield City, they have discounts up to 70% and a new supply of garments every week. We noticed that the 2nd floor of the building had been completely developed to house the Ryuma Group of companies including:

Ryuma Grocery was clean and tidy offering a well stocked wide variety of Japanese and foreign snacks and treats.

After meandering through the grocery we decided to load up on a few alcoholic beverages that caught our eye, the most interesting of which was the Bizan Special Shochu with Gold Leaf for PHP 650.00 ($US 17.00).

Ryuma Ramen and Ryuma Restaurant are two separate units but offer the same Japanese menu.

Ryuma Noodle Machine

It was too early for lunch, so the restaurant was still closed and we decided to grab a quick snack at Ryuma Ramen with their authentic and functional noodle machine and Japanese Head Chef.

After browsing through their Lenovo touch screen menu and asking the staff for their best sellers and recommendations we decided to share the Chashu Men, which is essentially a ramen with Chashu style pork.

Chashu Men- PHP 280.00 Net ($US 7.00)

Chashu is normally made from the fattier cuts of pork that have been braised over low heat for an extremely long time. When done properly it will render the fat out while converting the collagen into a gelatinous consistency that literally would melt in your mouth like butter.

The broth was truly exquisite and flavorful, the pork was savory and the freshly made noodles hit the spot. It was a great start to a great day that lay ahead. Have you been to Ryuma?

Aside from ramen they also offer sushi, sashimi, domburi, udon etc. What dishes did you like?

Steamed Crab with Lemon Butter Sauce @ Maxine by the Sea – PHP 1,100 per Kilo. ($US 24.00)

After our adventure to the Hundred Islands we decided to treat ourselves to a feast at the best restaurant in Lucap Alaminos – Maxine by the Sea! Having eaten there the night before, it only made sense to load up before our journey back to Makati.

We started off with good old San Miguel to cool off from the heat against the backdrop of the Hundred Islands.

Kelawen Talaba – Fresh Shelled Oysters “cooked” in vinegar and calamansi topped with onions, ginger and red hot pepper – PHP 150.00 ($US 3.50)

For appetizers we had the fresh oysters cooked similar to a the Spanish ceviche. This definitely got our digestive fires going for our main entree – Steamed Crab!

Maxine’s did a perfect job steaming this beauty that we chose to perfection that 1 Kilo seemed “BITIN” for a piece of heaven. The meat was so juicy, sweet and succulent! Maxine by the sea gets our vote as Hundred Islands al fresco dining at its finest. How was your dining experience there?

Marcos Island is definitely an island not to miss in the Hundred Islands and is the home of the Imelda Cave and has amazing views from the helicopter pad. It is an idyllic destination for couples as the helipad provides a base for a picnic with panoramic views and cool breezes.

We landed on Marcos Island at 12:15PM from Quezon Island a short bangka ride away. Immediately once we disembarked we noticed that the sand was significantly finer than Quezon Island and could have been a good swimming beach but the beach front was only 300 meters.

It was a 7 minute hike up the path to the Imelda Cave. Very steep staircase before reaching the jump-off point. We have read that some people actually take the plunge but considering there was only a small worn out rope to get back up we decided against this. It may have been an option at high tide though.

Hundreds of bats lined the ceiling. We then proceeded to the cemented helipad just a short two minute stroll from the Imelda Cave.

This would be a good place to relax on Marcos Island due to the elevation and scenic views. Also if you packed a quick snack, this would be the best place to camp on the island. As we were travelling light, we decided to just have lunch back at Maxine by the Sea in Lucap, Alaminos.

In our next post we will share with you our amazing lunch at Maxine by the Sea, please click here.

Quezon Island is one of the most developed islands in the Hundred Islands and is known to have the best swimming beach. It is the best destination for families as there are two dining pavilions and grilling areas.

From Governor’s Island we passed Turtle Island so named after it shape.

Upon arriving at Quezon Island around 10.30 AM, we decided to explore and see what was in the area.

There was a giant clam and coral nursery close to one of the dining pavillions.

The grills were functional and while we were walking around, a family was able to fire it up with some charcoal. You have to bring your own food though.

There is a bridge that leads to a viewing deck on the other side of the island. Have you been to Quezon Island when it was high tide and this ledge on the bridge could have been useful?

A view of the main beach from the view deck.

After all this walking around in the scorching heat we decided it was finally time to cool off in the cool waters and white sand of Quezon Island. We stayed until high noon before departing.

In our next post we move on to Marcos Island and the Imelda Cave, please click here.
