7" Premium Cheese Steak with Bacon - PHP 320.00 Net ($US 8.00)

The West Coast interpretation of the Philly Cheese Steak finally arrives in Manila! Check out our review here.

7″ Premium Cheese Steak with Bacon - PHP 320.00 Net ($US 8.00)

The Cheese Steak Shopis a California based restaurant that first opened its doors in 1982 by Keith Layton and after 30 years currently has 24 branches in Northern California. Margaret Uy has brought this franchise to Philippines and surprisingly it is the first international branch. Their main product is the Philadelphia Cheese Steak which is called the Philly Cheese Steak for short. What makes this brand successful is their guarantee for authenticity. What does this mean? Well it means that all ingredients are imported from the Philadelphia area. Learn more here!

Located in the Makati CBD along Arnaiz Ave. (formerly Pasay Road) is one of the newest quick service restaurants offering the classic Philly Cheese Steak.

We dropped in for the grand opening on Nov. 22, 2011 and took advantage of their Buy 1 Take 1 offer on their 7 inch sandwiches.

The Cheese Steak Shop’s menu is a simple one pager that is bright yellow and it took no time at all before ordering what we thought was the tastiest item.

We really liked their heavy duty Heinz sauce station, this is functional not ornamental. Oh yes they have Tabasco as well!

Make sure you read the above to customize your cheese steak experience. We recommend – toasted bread with extra onions with grilled hot and sweet peppers.

Large Onion Rings – PHP 180.00 Net ($US 4.50)

We started with their large onion rings a bit pricey for onions, but they were served in a 22 ounce cup with Heinz ranch dressing. They were crunchy and juicy, but we were expecting even bigger onions for the price.

7″ Premium Cheese Steak with Bacon - PHP 320.00 Net ($US 8.00)

We each had a 7 inch Premium Cheese Steak with Bacon and additional spinach (PHP 25.00 extra $0.40). Being a Californian institution which is focused on health, their cheese steak is not as greasy as the original Philly Cheese Steaks that you can easily find at the Philadelphia Greyhound Bus terminal, which is where I first experienced the excess oil running down my fingers as recommended by my old ISM friend Dennis Eisele who was studying at Wharton during the time. The imported sirloin beef was extremely soft and tender. I just wish there was more cheese and we could hardly taste the bacon. Nonetheless it was satisfactory.

Dimes Apple Juice – PHP 50.00 ($US 1.25)

Going for health with juice instead of soda. Can’t go wrong here although their selection of international beers were all so tempting. There is always next time or is there? For draft imported beer, our new filling station is Draft in the Fort which we will post soon.

They may have just opened, but they are ready to deliver around Makati! How was your Cheese Steak experience?

Domino's Pizza is now in the Philippines and more authentic than ever with their paper thin imported thin crusts and mozzarella cheese. Try their signature pizzas such as Extravaganza, Shrimpus, Potato and Deluxe and you will be enthralled! Branches now open in Marvin Plaza, Makati and Silver City, Pasig!

Domino’s Pizza the U.S. pizza delivery pioneer founded in 1960 from Ann Arbor, Michigan is now officially back in the Philippines. Listed on the NYSE and having retail sales of $US 6.2 Billion in 2010, they must be doing something right with their signature pizzas in the 69 markets worldwide that they operate in. Based on their press release the new master franchisee in the Philippines is a partnership formed by the Domino’s Pizza master franchisee for South Korea, Goldilocks Bakery and a minority operating partner. This partnership leverages the experience of a successful Domino’s master franchisee, a highly successful family-owned Philippine bakery chain with more than 300 stores and a partner who is a seasoned operator in the pizza business.

Potato Pizza – 7″ PHP – 249.00 ($US 6.00), 10″ PHP 349.00 ($US 8.50), 12″ PHP 549.00 ($US 14.00)

Mr. Tong Hong, the President and CEO of Domino’s Pizza Philippines has initially setup two branches in Makati and Pasig and is targeting 8 branches in the very near future. The new Domino’s is more authentic than the previous franchise that was in the Philippines in the 1990’s as they use real imported mozzarella instead of local processed cheese! Join us as we sample their top pizzas such as Extravaganza, Shrimpus, Potato and Deluxe!

Domino’s Marvin Plaza, Pasong Tamo, Makati branch was the closest to us and we were looking forward to giving them another shot. They have four parking slots available, seat 24 guests and have a fleet of spanking new delivery bikes.

Domino’s Pizza Menu

The order counter is an exact replica of a branch in the U.S. with their red and blue domino theme, open kitchen, and highly efficient electronic order system. After reviewing their menu, we ordered their thin crust specialty pizzas which are the Extravaganza, Shrimpus, Potato and Deluxe pizzas.

After a quick baking time of eight minutes our pizzas were soon to be served.

The moment of truth has arrived…

Extravaganza Pizza – 7″ PHP – 299.00 ($US 7.00), 10″ PHP 399.00 ($US 9.50), 12″ PHP 599.00 ($US 15.00)

A crispy thin crust pizza overloaded with tomato sauce, pepperoni, ham, mozzarella cheese, green peppers, onions, beef, mushrooms, black olives and Italian sausage. Follows the more is better adage and will definitely fill your belly. Classic combination of ingredients and sure to please.

Shrimpus Pizza – 7″ PHP – 299.00 ($US 7.00), 10″ PHP 399.00 ($US 9.50), 12″ PHP 599.00 ($US 15.00)

A thin crust pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, red paprika, ham, shrimp, bacon flakes and horseradish sauce. Tasty especially with the bacon and horseradish.

Potato Pizza – 7″ PHP – 249.00 ($US 6.00), 10″ PHP 349.00 ($US 8.50), 12″ PHP 549.00 ($US 14.00)

A thin crust pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, onions, sweet corn, mushrooms, potato wedges, bacon and mayonnaise. This pizza to us defines Domino’s Pizza and with each bite we could not help but crave for more of this carb on carb heaven. The potato wedges were crusty and insanely delicious with the bacon and mayonnaise. We just didn’t know what to do with the corn, it seemed out of place, but the additional fiber was soon adapted to.

Deluxe Pizza – 7″ PHP – 249.00 ($US 6.00), 10″ PHP 349.00 ($US 8.50), 12″ PHP 549.00 ($US 14.00)

Domino’s Extravaganza pizza without the ham, black olives and beef balls. We preferred the Deluxe to the Extravaganza as it was simpler.

Make sure to order the Domino’s thin crust as this is imported from the U.S. and even thinner than Yellow Cab’s Dear Darla. What is surprising is that even though it is so thin, it still manages to be firm, crispy and support all the toppings on the pizza! The regular hand tossed dough however is made locally by Goldilocks, has anybody tried this?

We had our pizza dine in, but if you order delivery it will be encapsulated within their patented Heat Wave Delivery bag. Mr. Tong Hong has explained that “Once inserted into a special bag, this technology creates a portable oven that minimizes heat loss during delivery. The outer material of the bag is made with water-repellent nylon, and the interior is lined with a special material called Thinsulate, which eliminates moisture and keeps the pizza both hot and fresh,”

Take advantage of Domino’s grand opening discounts before April 30, 2011!

We hope that Domino’s brings in their Wisconsin 6 Cheese Pizza and eventually also imports some buffalo mozzarella so that their Margherita pizza will be served as displayed on their marketing pictures. If you are looking to try Domino’s Pizza, we would highly recommend their Potato Pizza as it is the most unique pizza that they offer and worth coming back for. How did you like Domino’s Pizza?

Membership shopping does not get any better than this at S&R! Here is our Top 10 List.

S&R is more than just membership shopping, it is shopping on steroids! This is the only place in Manila that we actually get anxious about doing our weekly groceries because of all the pumped up and exciting products. Before we get to our Top 10 list, many people may be wondering what is membership shopping?

For only a minimal PHP 700.00 ($US 15.00) annual Gold membership fee, you could have access to various products and services that are not available in local shops in Manila through the extended network of S&R stores located in Fort Bonifacio, Baclaran, Common Wealth Alabang and now Cebu. The account only takes a few minutes to setup and the only requirements are filling up the application form and providing a valid ID such as drivers license, passport, SSS, etc.

The business model is based on the warehouse membership club shopping in the U.S. such as Costco, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Sam’s Club. Essentially by focusing on selling a high volume of products at lower unit costs, this would be to the benefit of you the consumer.

Our Top 10 Reasons to Shop at S&R are:

1) V8 Low Sodium 100% Vegetable Juice – PHP 234.95 ($US 5.50). This is the only place that we know that has V8 not in a can. If you are a fan of V8 this is the only way to go as the taste is remarkably cleaner.

2) Tillamook Strawberry Ice Cream – PHP 299.95 ($US 7.50) – Smooth and creamy with chunks of strawberries.

3) Snickers Ice Cream Bars – PHP 249.95 (USD 5.25) These are not just for the kids, make sure you drive home fast before they melt, or if you can’t wait, enjoy them in the car!

S&R stands for Sol and Robert Price, the founders of the Price Club shopping chain of stores in the US. The Philippine flagship store was opened at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig in 2001 as S&R Price Mart, with American partners.

In 2006, Puregold acquired it and was reopened under a new all-Filipino management led by S&R chairman Leonardo B. Dayao.

Did you know that the original Price Club store was opened in 1976 in an old airplane hangar, previously owned by Howard Hughes, and is still in operation today (Warehouse #401 located in San Diego)?

It is important to keep in mind that S&R holds twice a year “Member Treats” that is scheduled every March and September so mark your calendars. These “Members Treats” offer serious discounts and customers even arrive 30 minutes to an hour before the store opens. The next Members Treat is on September 14 – 18, 2011 in Metro Manila from 8:00AM to 9:00PM and in Cebu from Sept. 21 – 25, 2011.

Texas Joe's House of Ribs is one of the newest restaurants in Subic, and the food looks as good as it sounds. Authentic hickory smoked ribs in Subic, a treat on any occasion!

Old Texas Charm in Subic

Texas Joe’s House of Ribs was recently opened on February 7, 2010 by an American entrepreneur named Paul Trombetta who also has a few businesses in Saipan. The exterior of Texas Joe’s makes it stand out amongst all the other establishments along the Subic Waterfront Road, and what makes this place truly shine is that the food is prepared with as much enthusiasm as the sizeable investment that went into carving out this Ranchero delight in Subic.

Joe’s Spare Ribs Large Order (5 Bones) – PHP 549.00 ($US 14.00)

The over sized ribs are imported from Brazil and Texas Joe’s industrial broilers use hickory wood chips to infuse a rich smoky sweet flavor into the meat. Forget Tony Roma’s, this is the era of Texas Joe’s with ribs so succulent and tender to the bone!

What can’t ribs do without? Special home made BBQ sauce of course! Texas Joe’ provides Original, Honey BBQ and Habanero. We prefer the Habanero, not too spicy just enough to tingle!

Barbeque Quesadilla – PHP 259.00 ($US 6.00)

This was the best quesadilla we have ever had! The smoked pork, sour cream and pico de gallo and spicy cheese went together perfectly within the lightly toasted flour tortilla.

Hickory-Smoked Pork Sandwich – PHP 298.00 + Tex Mex Side Fries – PHP 39.00 ($US 8.00)

This is an excellent choice for an afternoon snack with a cold beer. Make sure to get the Tex Mex upgrade as this includes cheese and jalapeno peppers! They suggest to dump the coleslaw on the top for a Beale St. Memphis taste, it was gorgeous!

Pumpkin Pie A La Mode – PHP 129.00 ($US 3.00)

This was a nice change to the usual apple pie a la mode.

Aside from the great food, don’t hesitate to have a few rounds of Cricket on their electronic dart board or play some pool on their eleganta and pristine billiard table.

Extra Topping – PHP 20.00 ($USD 0.50)

Have you tried the Golden Spoon yet? It is one of the newest players in the Philippine frozen yogurt market and opened its first branch at Magallanes and Shangri-La Mall in November 2009. It is however older than Red Mango,Qoola, White Hat, etc. as it has been serving clients for over twenty years in Southern California and yes yogurt is served with a Golden Spoon.

What makes Golden Spoon different from all the other frozen yogurts? First of all, we were surprised that they do not use yogurt in powdered sachets as do all the other competitors.

The yogurt is in its liquid form and air shipped from California made with California grade A milk with a combination of three live bacterial cultures. The sales staff was kind enough to bring out the prepackaged yogurt to prove it was not powdered!

They also have an unrivaled selection of flavors (more than 50) including cake batter, peanut butter, etc. which are revolved each month.

Finish of your selection with fresh fruit, hot, cold or dry toppings. Unbelievably they also have black berries which are even more rare than blueberries and hard to come by in the Philippines.

If you want to taste the most flavors before making a decision, proceed to their Edsa Shangri-La branch as they offer a minimum of 18 flavors. Below is nutritional information.

Who makes the best cinnamon rolls in the world? Cinnabon does a remarkably good job with putting a smile on our faces. How can something so affordable be so sinfully delightful?

Classic Cinnabon – PHP 93.00 Net ($USD 2.00)

Who makes the best cinnamon rolls in the world? There is no dispute about that… Cinnabon of course! A U.S. brand created in 1985 that has been franchised in the Philippines since 1999 and now has over 750 bakeries globally. Did you know that it was first in the Philippines before the rest of Asia? If you haven’t tried one yet, you should because their branch network seems to be moving further and further away from Makati so it has become more of a craving as it is not as accessible as it used to be.

Thanks to Cannelle Food Corporation for bringing the best cinnamon roll for the local population to enjoy. What makes this cinnamon roll so unforgettable? Well it has to do with the fact that it is just so sinfully delightful beginning with the aromatics wafting through the mall, then biting into the gooey, warm and moist cinnamon infused dough topped with a sexy cream cheese sauce.

So we ask ourselves the question, why did all the branches in Makati close down? There was Greenbelt 1, Rockwell, and Shell Magallanes. Now the closest to Makati is Greenhills and Podium! Could it be that the yoghurt and gelato craze has resulted in steep competition for the disposable income of consumers allocated to traditional baked sweet indulgences?

What are you waiting for? Bring back that loving feeling and get your Cinnabon fix now! You can get 4 Pieces takeout for a discounted price of PHP 330.00 ($USD 8.00)

Army Navy Burger + Burrito is the new venture of Yellow Cab and provides exactly what its guests would expect, simple and modern tex-mex bunker style. Recommend the Burger over the burrito!

Bully Boy Burger by ARMY NAVY Burger + Burrito = PHP 235.00 Net ($US 6.00)

Are you hungry yet? The Bully Boy Burger of Army Navy Burger + Burrito was conceived to feed a battalion or one hungry customer! Army Navy opened its first branch at Tagaytay on March 2009 and has conveniently now come to Makati in the spanking new Glorietta 5. We sampled a selection of their offerings from quesadillas to burritos and fries and were quite pleased with the outcome. It came as no surprise that this establishment is the brainchild of Yellow Cab who have an amazing Dear Darla Pizza.

What attracted us to this establishment initially was the eye catching colorful logo and branding. It was straight to the point and who in the world does not like burger and burritos? It intrigued us so we tried out what they had to offer.

Like Yellow Cab, the order counter was in front of their kitchen and was designed like an army bunker. Ambiance was modern and functional open design with all the piping, electrical, and lighting fixtures exposed.

Cheese Quesadilla - PHP 85.00 Net ($US 2.00)

As an appetizer we started off with the cheese quesadillas, the cheese was bland and it seemed like there was not enough cheese. While the tortilla itself was soft and gentle, most of the flavor came from the salsa. We would not order this again.

Chicken Burrito – PHP 135.00 Net ($US 3.00)

Aksana had the chicken burrito and she enjoyed this as the flavors of the spanish rice, tender chicken, beans, onions and cilantro all came together with the salsa. The slice of lime provided was so small that she only managed to squeeze a whopping three or four drops. They should provide larger slices of lime and a bigger serving salsa to fully enjoy this burrito. Did you know that burrito translated to english means a small donkey? The story is the person who invented this flour based taco sold it on the streets carried around by his donkey. While burritos are an excellent example of Mexican food outside of Mexico, they are only a common dish in northern Mexico.

Freedom Fries – PHP 60.00 Net ($US 1.50)

The shoe string fries were a crispy and tasty side dish. The paprika and herb seasoning made us gobble up these mini fries like there was no tomorrow. Perfect with mayo, or go thousand island if you like! Interesting though that the name Freedom Fries is also used at Handle Bar Makati where we normally watch the World Cup.

Bully Boy Burger – PHP 235.00 Net ($US 6.00)

The Bully Boy Burger is simply a triple quarter pounder housed within a toasted sesame seed kaiser bun. A total of 340 grams of ground beef definitely goes a long way to filling your belly. We were able to finish this off without a problem because the patties were juicy, tender and we believe the magic ingredient was Knor seasoning. The pattie itself though seemed to fall apart, possibly a result of less meat extenders such as crackers or bread crumbs which is a healthy sign. Each bite however results in the fatty jus of the meat dripping all over the place. A word of caution is be careful as it could get messy very fast.
